Navigating the "Cloud" isn't quite as easy as it could be. The Information technology industry is in the early growth phase adopting "cloud computing" as a standard.
That is why we are releasing our own "Glossary of Cloud Terms". These terms are accurate, and generally accepted industry wide, but further, clarify how they are used within the Verologix world.
| (SAAS) Software-as-a-service: | A software application deployment model where applications are deployed and utilized over the web in either a shared or private cloud. |
| (IAAS) Infrastructure-as-a-service: | The delivery of infrastructure resources and provisions on demand in order to create utilization elasticity, and reduce CAPEX. Sub categories include "Server-as-a-service, storage- as-a-service, or even Data Center as-a-service and Online Backup Services. |
| (PAAS) Platform-as-a-service: | Often referred to as "Cloud OS" - A collection of Web Services for developers to create web applications in the cloud. These "On Demand" development environments include the infrastructure in the cost of the service. Examples: Windows Azure, Amazon Web services, Force.com |
| On Premise Services: | IT Services deployment method where the infrastructure is located at the users site. Can be either managed or non-managed by a service provider. (see MSP) |
| Hosted Services: | IT Services deployment method where the infrastructure is located at a service providers site (HOST), and the service is the same as if it were on premise. (not a web app). Infrastructure and applications are typically managed, and administration may be managed or non-managed by a service provider. (see MSP) |
| Managed Services: | Contracted IT services that are delivered by a managed service provider (MSP) as an extension of the company. May be deployed as a staff augmentation, tactical "specific services as required" or to manage the entire IT department in support of the CEO's plan. |
| Online Backup Services: | A data protection strategy that replicates data offsite to a secure data center in the cloud. Supports several data protection strategies from simple backup and recovery to disaster recovery. |
